CALECIM^® Professional is the world’s only skincare powered by ethically sourced red deer cord-lining stem cells, designed to regenerate skin and aid in post-procedure recovery and results.

The technology used to create the CALECIM^® Professional product range is the result of 10 years of cutting edge research by Cell Research Corp, a Singapore based bio tech company. Scientists from Cell Research Corp isolated two types of stem cell strains, epithelial and mesenchymal, ethically sourced from the umbilical cord lining membrane of red deer in New Zealand. Both stem cell strains actively produce proteins when they are grown in culture media. The protein mix in culture media is called Rejuvenating Conditioned Media which helps skin cells appear more youthful.

All four products in the professional-only range contain this patented protein mix. The extract consists of a mixture, in specific proportions, of cytokines, growth factors, extracellular matrix proteins, amino acids, peptides and other proteins. They represent the full complement of proteins that are generated by the umbilical cord lining mesenchymal stem cells. These stem cells have the potential to increase epidermal cell turnover, reduce the appearance of pigmentation, fines lines and redness, and improve skin elasticity.

‘The key technology behind CALECIM^® Professional is the growth factors that come from the cells harvested from the umbilical cord lining,’ explains double board certified cosmetic dermatologist Professor Mitchel P Goldman, MD and Chairman of the CALECIM^® Professional Medical Advisory Board.

‘When the cells are grown in a petri dish, they release packets of different growth factors which then cause other cells to become rejuvenative. They are proteins we refer to as cytokines and growth factors.’

Importantly, the nutrients, collagen and proteins found in CALECIM^® Professional are derived from neonatal mammalian stem cells, which signal skin restoration in a way human skin cells can understand, and in a way plant-derived ingredients cannot. CALECIM^® also uses a unique trans-epidermal delivery system so its products are better absorbed by the skin.

‘This is the first time that umbilical cord lining stem cells – or stem cells in general – are being truly utilised in a topical skincare to promote skin health,’ says Dr Goldman.

Enhanced Skin Restoration

In-clinic procedures work on the principles of ‘controlled injury’ to skin tissue through light, electric currents, needling and other modalities. This initiates natural healing, intended to encourage ‘forced’ skin regeneration and ultimately improved aesthetics. CALECIM^® Professional’s forte is in enhanced skin recovery. The mix of growth factors, cytokines, peptides and proteins sends signals to the skin to help enhance the natural restoration process.

These signals help restore healthy epidermal cell turnover. The aim is to activate cells which results in better skin rejuvenation. It also works to build up extracellular matrix and increase collagen synthesis and encourage angiogenesis.

‘The proteins from the umbilical stem cells don’t just affect the epidermis but also the dermis,’ explains Dr Goldman. ‘They are giving the fibroblasts nutrients to help make more elastin and collagen fibres, as well as hyaluronic acid. This is what gives a lifting and fullness of the skin and causes a regenerative effect. While this occurs on normal skin, it is enhanced on treated skin, whether it is a laser or microneedling, or any technology we are using to rejuvenate the skin.

It accelerates wound healing and has anti-inflammatory proteins. In clinical studies, in as early as two weeks patients could see the effects. In terms of laser, we have seen immediate results.’

Improved Healing

In laboratory studies, Rejuvenating Conditioned Media has been shown to encourage skin cell mobility, resulting in improved healing. ‘In a split face study* we used the CALECIM^® Professional Serum on one side of a patient’s face and a placebo on the other. There is a very clear difference with the real product and the non-real product with statistical significance,’ says Dr Goldman.

‘In another study**, we resurfaced patients with fractionated CO² laser and again we applied half the face with placebo and half with the real product. Not only did we see increased healing and decreased erythema and oedema but after two months of use, the CALECIM^® Professional-treated side still had statistically better results over and above the side that wasn’t using it.’

Twice as many patients in the control group had more erythema on the control side of the face when compared to the CALECIM^® treated side of the face post-procedure. The CALECIM® treated side had less edema starting at 3 hours post laser resurfacing and the effect continued for 7 days in a majority of the patients. All patients reported a decrease in pain on the CALECIM^® treated side, starting on day 2.

‘One of the major benefits of this product is that the improvement patients can see occurs fairly rapidly,’ says Dr Goldman. ‘Studies have shown that within two weeks, patients can start seeing an improvement. And that’s actually quite rapid. In the older growth factor technologies, it took at least two months to see what we are seeing in just two weeks with CALECIM^®. It truly is revolutionary.’

Who is Calecim^® Professional for?

The CALECIM^® Professional Range, distributed in Australia by Advanced Cosmeceuticals, is beneficial to use both pre- and posttreatment on patients undergoing IPL, radiofrequency, laser, microdermabrasion, microneedling and chemical peels.

Patients are advised to apply CALECIM^® Professional Serum immediately post-treatment for at least two days after treatment to improve skin restoration, reduce erythema and oedema and minimise downtime.

‘Classically, my patients use the serum after any procedure,’ says Dr Goldman. ‘I also recommend they apply the day and night cream to get additional hydration benefits from hyaluronic acid and other ingredients in the products.’
