Q&A with
Dr Shobhan Manoharan
What range of conditions and indications do you use Lumenis’ UltraPulse Alpha to treat?
We treat a range of conditions with the Alpha, but the main indications would be for scars (acne, post- traumatic, surgical and burns) and advanced resurfacing for photoageing and rejuvenation.
What attracted you to use UltraPulse Alpha?
I initially trialled the UltraPulse a number of years ago as an alternative to my previous CO2 lasers as I needed a device that was more consistent, and powerful, and yet had a high safety profile. UltraPulse has been the premier and industry leader in this field, so it was a natural fit for my resurfacing, scar and rejuvenation work.
What has been your overall experience with the UltraPulse and now the Alpha to date?
My experience with UltraPulse has been excellent, with a high level of reliability, consistent energy delivery and ease of use. The Alpha has built on this technology and taken it to the next level, making it even more user-friendly, tuneable and providing excellent results. The UltraPulse Alpha, in my opinion, is well and truly the leader in CO2 technology, and continues to build on the legacy of the original UltraPulse to be the gold- standard ablative laser system.
What is unique about Alpha technology compared to other scar revision technologies?
After comparing several fractional- ablative devices, it’s evident that the UltraPulse Alpha’s short pulse creates a deeper, cleaner wound than many other systems, enabling precision in the treatment of scars and less peripheral damage and complications.
Having used the UltraPulse for a decade, and now the Alpha, it is clear to me that the precision of the device, the ability to tune and modulate the Deep FX fractional handpiece and the Active FX CPG handpiece, and the beauty of combining these various settings, makes it a go-to device for most scar types and all skin types.
What are the benefits of Alpha technology when treating acne scarring?
Alpha lends itself beautifully to combination therapies for acne scarring, which is often complex and of various depths. We combine surgical techniques, such as subcision, punch-excisions/ elevations, with deep fractional and more surface ablative techniques, all in the one session to address scarring at various levels and depths. The fractional settings also enable us to combine laser- assisted drug delivery techniques, which allows for further, more novel modulation of acne scarring.
‘ULTRAPULSE ALPHA’S SHORT PULSE CREATES A DEEPER, CLEANER WOUND THAN MANY OTHER SYSTEMS, ENABLING PRECISION IN THE TREATMENT OF SCARS AND LESS PERIPHERAL DAMAGE AND COMPLICATIONS.’
Could you talk us through some of the results you have achieved with the UltraPulse Alpha?
With the UltraPulse and the Alpha, we have consistently achieved high-level results in the field of acne and traumatic, post-surgical and burns scars. We have patients who have regained confidence in themselves and have benefitted from the treatment both personally and professionally. It certainly has been delightful to see their journeys over time.
I also delight in patients who have quite severe photodamage, wrinkling and elastosis and are able to achieve results with the UltraPulse Alpha that are not replicable with surgery or injectables. We do, however, often work with surgeons, who perform surgical lifts before or after UltraPulse resurfacing, as well as combination collaborative treatments, which can really make significant improvements to patients.
How user-friendly is the Alpha device? Would you say that the device is easy to use by most medical personnel?
The Alpha is extremely user friendly, even more so than its predecessor. It certainly lends itself to not just advanced users but also clinicians beginning their journey into CO2 treatments. The new interface is great, offering an intuitive and user-friendly experience. When selecting an indication, you can simply scan a QR code that will direct you to a website with tailored recommendations based on specific parameters.
What are the major benefits of Alpha for aesthetic clinicians?
The Alpha definitely allows you to take your aesthetic practice to another level. There is an opportunity to treat patients more intensively, yet within safe parameters. Clinicians can provide a greater degree of improvement for more advanced photoageing changes and scarring, and also complement the other services offered within their clinics, including lower-intensity energy- based devices, peels, injectables and skincare.
What advice would you give another medical practitioner considering investing in Alpha?
I would suggest that the investment is excellent, with the potential for great patient outcomes and ROI, but also that they should take up all the training opportunities Lumenis provides for the device to ensure they can maximise the true potential of the Alpha. AMP
