The Secret RF Microneedle Fractional RF system offers an innovative solution for axillary hyperhidrosis.
The Secret RF machine by Ilooda, distributed in Australia by Cryomed, uses minimally invasive micro-needles to deliver controlled RF energy directly into various depths of the skin (from 0.5mm up to 3.5mm). It has had outstanding success for all skin types with very low risk of side effects and PIH – a key difference when compared with optical based treatments (IPL and laser).
Melbourne dermatologist Dr Michael Rich has three Cryomed devices, one of which is the Secret RF. “The Secret RF uses fractional radiofrequency, which means the microneedles leave 360 degrees around each fractional beam,” he explains. “This allows areas of unaffected skin which helps the healing process. The precisely arranged micro- needles (25/10 per head) emit RF energy in finite areas without overlap, so that the coagulated thermal zones are uniform within the treatment area. Therefore, high energy can be applied to the target tissue without any risk of energy interference caused by overlapping of RF energy in the close distance.
The Secret RF Microneeedle Fractional RF system is indicated for various conditions including hyperpigmentation, deep and shallow wrinkles, acne and acne scars, skin laxity and overall skin rejuvenation. “The Secret RF is fantastic for skin tightening, improvement of texture and reduction of scarring – and this all comes with just a few days of downtime (one to two in some cases) which patients obviously prefer,” says Dr Rich.
Yet another indication of the microneedling system is hyperhidrosis, with the Secret RF being hailed as an innovative method for the treatment of this often debilitating condition.
A new way to treat axillary hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis can significantly impact the sufferer’s quality of life. Perspiration is generally four to five times that of normal sweat product, which impacts on the patient’s everyday life.
Currently the main non-surgical treatment options are aluminium chloride-based antiperspirant deodorants and botulinum toxin injections. The former is temporary and the latter is effective yet costly for a temporary solution. Surgical treatment options include axillary curettage, skin excisions and sympathectomy, which can all demand significant downtime.
“At present there is demand for a treatment method that would bridge the gap between surgical and non- surgical therapies. A radiofrequency thermotherapy approach could bridge this gap, offering a minimally invasive treatment option in patients suffering from axillary hyperhidrosis,” says Dr Christoph H. Schick of the German Hyperhidrosis Center in Munich, Germany.
In a recent clinical trial, Dr Schick treated 26 patients with grade III axillary hyperhidrosis using the Secret RF. After only two treatment sessions, spaced six weeks apart, results showed a strong and highly significant reduction in sweat volume from an average of 200mg to 50mg per minute.
Post treatment effects included transient erythema and a low-grade exudate with subsequent superficial crusting over the treatment area.
All study participants tolerated the treatments well, describing side effects similar to a sunburn. The patient hyperhidrosis disease severity scale (HDSS) and the dermatology life quality index (DLQI) scores also indicated significant improvements post-treatment.
“Radiofrequency thermotherapy represents an interesting treatment modality for axillary hyperhidrosis,” says Dr Schick. “The treatment is painless under local anaesthesia and post-treatment side effects are minor and transient. Despite a marked improvement in axillary hyperhidrosis after two treatments, most of the patients were keen for further improvement, so a third or fourth treatment can certainly be considered.”
Dr Juri Kirsten, dermatologist at the Clinic for Aesthetic Operative Dermatology and Anti-Ageing Medicine in Berlin, Germany, has also experienced effective results using the Secret RF for the treatment of hyperhidrosis.
His requirements for successful treatment had to meet:
- Outpatient treatment by local anaesthesia
- High result at time of treatment in reduced number of sweat glands
- Short recovery time
- Long-term efficacy
- Economic efficiency and profitability.
“These requirements were met with the Secret RF microneedling system,” says Dr Kirsten.
“This new therapy for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis, using Secret RF, allows for an innovative treatment method.
The Secret RF provides a very effective alternative compared with sweat gland suction curettage, as well as the traditional botulinum toxin treatment,” Dr Kirsten concludes.
