The 2018 ASPS statistics on cosmetic surgery have just been released and reveal new trends in body-shaping procedures.
New data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows continued growth in cosmetic procedures over the last year, with nearly a quarter million more cosmetic procedures performed in 2018 than the previous year. According to the ASPS annual plastic surgery statistics report, there were more than 17.7 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2018, a number that has risen steadily over the past five years.
The statistics also reveal a rise in new trends in body-shaping procedures, with a spike in non-invasive fat reduction, as well as surgeries such as breast augmentations and liposuction.

Year of the body
Three of the top five surgical procedures focus on the body, and in 2018 there was an increase in all three. In fact, there were more than 12,000 more liposuction procedures performed in 2018 than in 2017, while breast augmentations increased by four percent. There were also surges in other body- sculpting procedures like buttock augmentations with fat grafting and thigh lifts.
Breast augmentation was the most popular form of plastic surgery among Americans last year, according to the latest gures. Some 313,735 cases of breast augmentation were reported, followed by 258,558 liposuction procedures.
‘Liposuction continues to be the gold standard in body contouring because of its versatility, e ciency and effectiveness,’ said ASPS President Alan Matarasso, MD. ‘With liposuction, one treatment may be all you need to reshape problem areas. A plastic surgeon can treat more areas—and larger areas—in one procedure. Liposuction also provides a more consistent and predictable result than non-invasive treatments, but new non-surgical fat reduction machinery continues to evolve and play a role in reshaping areas of the body.’
Interestingly, rates of pec and buttock implants dropped the most sharply, by 29 and 28 percent respectively. However, buttock augmentation with fat grafting was up by 19 percent from the previous year. Non-invasive body contouring is growing too, with a six percent increase over the previous year.
Hair transplantation also gained popularity by almost 20 percent: up to 23,658 from 19,979.

Saving face
Remaining steady with a three percent increase, Botox has been the number-one aesthetic procedure performed by plastic surgeons since 1999. More than one billion dollars was spent on injectables in 2018 alone in the US.
While the majority of minimally invasive procedures had little change, the standouts in this arena were fat grafting to the face (up 16 percent) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which saw a 12 percent increase over last year. AMP
