A permanent solution to excessive sweat is now within reach. miraDry has set the benchmark as the first and only TGA approved device for use in the axilla, for treating excessive underarm sweat.
Excessive sweat can often be an embarrassing, uncomfortable and socially
awkward issue. Whether it is the result of heavy exercise, stress or hot temperatures, profuse sweating can have a negative impact on an individual’s everyday life and self-confidence.
More than 650,000 Australians suffer from extreme sweating (hyperhidrosis) and 53 percent* of adults have expressed interest in reducing sweat.
Now you can offer your patients a permanent solution. Distributed by Device Consulting, miraDry treats, excessive sweat and hyperhidrosis in the axilla. In addition, other handpieces are currently in development for areas such as the palms.
Dr Sara Kotai from Man Cave in Sydney’s CBD has been using miraDry since April 2015 and is impressed by the results, “We treat a variety of patients, both men and women, and overall I have seen some great results. Ninety percent of my patients only require a single treatment for sufficient reduction of sweating. Around 10% of my clients have returned for a second treatment after three months. I have many happy patients, who’s quality of life has signifiacntly improved.”
The mechanism behind miraDry
In two treatments, miraDry is said to destroy 22,000-30,000 underarm sweat glands, reducing sweat volume by an average of 82 percent.
It does so through a microwave-based technology, which is targeted at the depth of the large sweat glands in the axilla.
The applicator has a suction mechanism that is positioned over the prescribed area. The controlled microwave energy then radiates and destroys targeted sweat glands. The procedure is long lasting and can be used on all skin types.
Prior to the procedure, underarm skin is marked to help guide the treatment. The procedure typically takes less than an hour to perform and is well tolerated due to local anaesthetic injection prior to treatment. There is virtually no downtime post-procedure, however patients are advised to refrain from heavy exercising for 72 hours.
Treatment protocol is relatively simple. Prior to treatment, templates are applied to the skin, which generate an inked grid, before the injection of tumescent anaesthesia. The applicator tip is then applied to each individual numbered grid marking as prompted by the computer screen.
Permanent results, no downtime
Published studies indicate that around 90% of patients will achieve a satisfactory reduction in sweating.
Sweat glands are markedly and permanently reduced and do not regenerate after the procedure. Most patients will notice an obvious reduction in underarm sweating within one to two days of the treatment.
For optimal results, two procedures are spaced three months apart. This is the standard protocol to ensure the best possible results for permanent sweat reduction, with the majority of patients requiring only a single treatment.
miraDry carries no risk of rebound sweating and can be performed under local anaesthetic with virtually no downtime.
miraDry is only appropriate in a medical practice but medically supervised, specifically trained nursing staff can carry out the actual treatment. This saves valuable time for medical practitioner.
Some tenderness is to be expected after the local anaesthetic wears off, however any residual discomfort is well tolerated.
Applying ice packs is recommended post-procedure.

PATIENT CASE STUDY
Male, 29, presented to Dr Sara Kotai at Man Cave Sydney with excessive underarm seating and general dissatisfaction with its negative impact on his lifestyle. He has received one treatment with miraDry. This is his experience.
What made you decide to seek treatment?
I’ve always been a severe sweater. Even on cool days the underarms of my shirts would be covered in sweat – it was a real problem and I often felt self-conscious. I saw the ad for miraDry and I immediately called for an appointment.
Could you talk me through the treatment? Was it painful?
The nurse first gave me a few local anesthetic injections. The treatment wasn’t painful at all, as soon as I felt the heating sensation on my underarm it switched to cooling mode – it was comfortable.
How did you feel afterwards? Was there any downtime?
Afterwards I took some paracetamol and I must admit that my sleep that night was a little restless. However the next day I felt fine, and it only hurt to touch or to apply pressure to the underarm. Overall my downtime was minimal.
What kind of results have you experienced?
The results have been amazing. It’s been a few months since my treatment and I’ve noticed some big differences, especially with the little amount of deodorant I now use! My shirts no longer have those sweat rings around the underarm.
Would you recommend this treatment to other people suffering the effects of sweating?
I would definitely recommend miraDry to anyone who doesn’t like excessive sweating. For me, it’s been life-changing.
