DEKA’s new body contouring system Onda uses the latest microwave technology, Coolwaves, for fat removal, cellulite reduction and skin tightening, delivering more treatment effect with greater comfort.

ONDA is the world’s first and only body shaping device to use revolutionary new Coolwaves microwave-based technology – and is set to change the way in which non-surgical body shaping procedures are delivered.

Coolwaves bypass the uppermost layers of skin tissue, helping deliver more energy/heat directly to where it is needed: the subcutaneous fat cells. This new technology helps dramatically reduce the heating of the surface tissue by focusing heat in the subdermal fatty tissues, with 20% more heating of the fat than laser and RF fat reduction technologies while keeping the skin cooler and more comfortable. Additionally, ONDA Coolwaves has no consumables, no downtime, and offers faster treatment in fewer sessions.

‘ONDA is the latest technology in fat reduction and has no consumables,’ says Perth facial plastic surgeon Dr Jayson Oates. ‘It also has useful benefits in skin tightening and cellulite reduction – which we have wanted effective treatments for.’

Coolwaves technology

Coolwaves are a specifically selected frequency of microwave (2.45 GHz). At such a high frequency, skin tissue is almost transparent to the energy passed and most of the energy is delivered directly to the subdermal fat layer. This helps dramatically reduce the heating of the surface tissue while reaching key temperature thresholds for fat destruction that other technologies can’t match.

‘The fact that fat, and not the skin, heats preferentially with the microwaves means it is easy to get the necessary heat down into the fat without heating the skin as much,’ says Dr Oates. ‘It is the skin that is sensitive, where the heat receptors are, so this technology makes fat reduction more comfortable.’

ONDA Coolwaves achieves temperatures in excess of 50-53°C in the sub-dermal fat layer while keeping the skin cool and comfortable (~38°C-39°C). Most laser and RF fat reduction is limited to working between 42°C and 47°C. It has been shown that adipocyte viability is reduced by 60% after 3 minutes of treatment at 45°C, 80% after 1 minute at 50°C or by 84% after 2 minutes at 50°C.¹

Broader range, faster treatment

In addition to enhanced patient comfort, ONDA Coolwaves offers faster treatment and to a broad range of areas. A 15cm x 15cm area can be completed in 8 to 10 minutes, and effective results can be seen in as little as 1-4 treatments.

Because it delivers and focuses more energy in the deeper tissue while skin temperature remains comfortable, it can effectively treat body areas and ‘hard’ fat that are difficult with other fat reduction technologies such as cryolipolysis.

‘ONDA Coolwaves has thus far been able to deliver results in half the number of treatments than the machines we’ve previous used,’ Dr Oates shares. ‘We recommend 4 treatments spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart, so it takes time to get the results. But patients often see benefits after 1 or 2 treatments which keeps them encouraged to do the series.’

‘The range of handpieces has been wonderful for smaller areas and areas unsuitable for our other devices, giving us a broader range of body areas that are treatable,’ he adds.

Onda’s Coolwaves™ technology simultaneously delivers enhanced fat reduction, cellulite reduction and longer-term collagen stimulation that competing devices are unable to deliver. It targets the skin’s connective tissue to reduce stubborn cellulite and cause shrinkage and stimulation of the collagen fibres for skin tightening.

Skin collagen formation and cell proliferation require temperatures to exceed 50°C; at 52°C and 55°C collagen fibres tend to demonstrate a greater degree of curvature with increasing temperature. Similarly, for effective cellulite reduction, temperatures in the range of 55°C are required to induce septal tightening. s With temperatures in excess of 50-53°C, ONDA’s improved effects on collagen and cellulite septae are histologically demonstrated.

‘No one wants sagging skin after volume is removed. Even more so, women want cellulite reduction too. DEKA has been able to produce handpieces that allow enough heat to the deeper dermis to stimulate collagen and changes in structure of cellulite septae in the same treatment as fat reduction. I have never understood the cause and thus treatment of cellulite; I am just happy ONDA works,’ says Dr Oates.

‘The ideal patient has reasonable expectations and should not see treatment as a replacement for diet and exercise,’ he continues. ‘It is not indicated for patients who need major fat volumes reduced. Moderately overweight patients with cellulite do well. Ideally, 6 treatments for cellulite and 4 to 6 for skin tightening are required. Patients often see improvement in cellulite after the first treatment. Soft fat is easier to reduce than firm fat.’

No consumables

The ease of use of the system, combined with effective results and no consumable results provide a good return on investment for practitioners.

‘Treatments to reduce fat will always be in demand, but my experience with fat freezing was that, although it worked very well, the cost of consumables prevented it from being a profitable treatment,’ says Dr Oates. ‘ONDA offers the unique benefit of one treatment for fat reduction, skin tightening and cellulite reduction, without any consumables.’
