Dr Mahyar Amjadi, a Sydney specialist plastic surgeon, was found guilty of professional misconduct by the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal following a lengthy investigation into his treatment of 14 patients, some of whom reported life-altering complications.
Dr Amjadi, who runs Luxe Clinic in Edgecliff, Sydney, faced allegations supported by extensive evidence from the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC), including over 6,500 pages of evidence detailing patient outcomes.
One of the most serious incidents involved a patient who experienced “life-threatening” complications when a liposuction cannula damaged multiple organs, including the pancreas, liver and spleen, during an abdominoplasty procedure.
In another case, Dr Amjadi inappropriately performed breast surgery on a patient only four months postpartum, contrary to accepted medical guidelines. The tribunal also determined he inappropriately removed excessive skin from another patient’s arm during surgery.
Dr Amjadi was also criticised for performing surgeries that may have exceeded his expertise, contributing to substandard outcomes. In one case he inserted deltoid muscle implants – a surgery he had never performed before – which resulted in wound complications.
Other complaints highlighted inadequate postoperative care and failure to provide clear, thorough communication to patients. The HCCC report detailed additional allegations, such as unlicensed and unnecessary procedures, incomplete patient consultations, and a lack of informed consent.
The tribunal found Dr Amjadi’s practice displayed a persistent pattern of conduct that put patient safety at risk.
Dr Amjad told the tribunal his complication rate in both 2018 and 2019 was approximately 10 to 15 percent, which he considered acceptable.
As a result of the tribunal’s findings, Dr Amjadi now faces restrictions on his medical licence. A further tribunal hearing is scheduled next month to determine whether his medical registration will be suspended or permanently cancelled.
