The Aesthetic Society, formerly known as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in collaboration with CosmetAssure, has released its annual Aesthetic Plastic Surgery National Databank report for 2023.

The latest statistics reveal a 2.9% increase in total surgical procedures from 2022 to 2023, and a 10.2% overall growth in surgical procedures from 2019 to 2023.

“The landscape of aesthetic plastic surgery continues to evolve as evidenced by our annual report,” says Dr Kiya Movassaghi, President of The Aesthetic Society. “Surgical procedures are maintaining strong performance and as our previous reports have shown, nonsurgical treatments steadily rise. Our specialty is well-positioned to meet the dynamic needs and preferences of our patients.”

Key findings from the 2023 Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Statistics: The Top 10

Liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, breast lift and eyelid surgery have consistently remained the most common procedures, in that order.

1. Liposuction

Liposuction was the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in 2023, with 394,527 procedures. This figure represents a 58.9% increase compared to 2019, reflecting the growing desire for body contouring.

Women accounted for a significant majority of liposuction procedures, with 369,799 procedures (93.7% of the total), while men sought 24,728 procedures (6.3% of the total). The age group most inclined towards liposuction was the 35-50 demographic, accounting for 194,948 procedures (49.4% of the total).

2. Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation secured the second position with 249,560 procedures performed in 2023. This figure represents an 11.2% increase compared to 2019. The age group most inclined towards breast augmentation was the 18-34 demographic, with 96,898 procedures (38.8% of the total).

3. Tummy tuck

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, was the third-most performed procedure in 2023, with 194,875 procedures. This figure represents a 46% increase compared to 2019.

Women accounted for the vast majority of tummy tuck procedures, with 189,646 procedures (97.3% of the total), while men sought 5,229 procedures (2.7% of the total). The age group most inclined towards tummy tucks was the 35-50 demographic, with 108,879 procedures (55.9% of the total).

4. Breast lift

Breast lift procedures secured the fourth position with 147,611 procedures performed in 2023, a 65% increase compared with 2019. The age group most inclined towards breast lifts was the 35-50 demographic, with 70,818 procedures (48% of the total).

5. Eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery comes in fifth position with 113,996 procedures in 2023, growing by 48% compared with 2019.

Women accounted for the majority of eyelid surgeries, with 98,498 procedures (86.4% of the total), while men sought 15,498 procedures (13.6% of the total). The age group most inclined towards eyelid surgery was the 51-64 demographic, with 54,678 procedures (48% of the total).

6. Facelift

Facelifts secured the sixth position with 96,061 procedures performed in 2023. This figure is a notable 81.5% increase compared to 2019, highlighting a growing demand for surgical facial rejuvenation.

Women accounted for the majority of facelifts, with 89,368 procedures (93% of the total), while men sought 6,693 procedures (7% of the total). The age group most inclined towards facelifts was the 65+ demographic, with 41,840 procedures (43.6% of the total).

7. Breast reduction

There were 75,782 breast reduction procedures performed in 2023, a 52.6% increase compared to 2019. The age group most inclined towards breast reduction was the 35-50 demographic, with 24,778 procedures (32.7% of the total).

8. Breast implant removal

There were 74,326 breast implant removals, or breast implant explantations, performed in 2023, increasing 40% over 2019 statistics. Typical age groups were the 35-50 and 51-64 demographics, with 28,442 procedures (38.3% of the total) and 28,377 procedures (38.2% of the total), respectively.

9. Rhinoplasty

Nose surgery secured the ninth position with 43,864 procedures performed in 2023 and has remained steady over the past 4 years with a 3.4% increase compared 2019.

Women accounted for the majority of nose surgeries, with 37,383 procedures (85.2% of the total). The age group most inclined towards nose surgery was the 18-34 demographic, with 20,423 procedures (46.6% of the total).

10. Neck lift

With 42,153 procedures performed in 2023, neck lifts jumped a significant 97% compared with 2019. Women accounted for the majority of neck lifts, with 37,031 procedures (87.8% of the total), with most in the 51-64 demographic (49% of the total).
