Dr Charlene DeHaven, Clinical Director at iS Clinical, recently presented at the Non-Surgical Symposium 2024 on harnessing extremozymes as cosmeceutical ingredients. We chat with Dr DeHaven about iS Clinical’s Extremozymes technology, a proprietary combination of extremophilic enzymes, clinically proven to help protect and revitalise the foundation of healthy skin, and their role in the iS Clinical skincare range.
Q&A with Dr Charlene DeHaven
What are extremozymes and how do they help protect DNA and other vital structures from environmental aggressors?
Extremozymes are enzymes made by plants living in extreme environments that protect the plant’s DNA and thereby allow the plant to survive in severe environments. Extremozyme technology is used in iS Clinical products to help protect our own human skin from environmental stresses.
What are the skin manifestations when DNA is damaged?
Examples of skin manifestations from DNA damage include loss of vitality and luminosity, hyperpigmentation, signs of photoageing, decrease/loss of youthful appearance, and development of skin cancer.
DNA within the chromosomes in the nucleus of the skin cell serves as the command centre of the cell, directing the cell’s functioning. If this DNA is damaged by free radicals and environmental stresses, the DNA does not function properly and gives incomplete or incorrect messages in directing the cell’s function.
How does iS Clinical Extremozyme technology work to protect the skin?
The genetic adaptations of extremophiles and their extremozymes have profound functional applications to skincare. iS Clinical’s proprietary extremozyme technology helps to protect the skin from environmental stresses, mitigating or preventing damage so that the DNA continues to function in an optimal manner.
iS Clinical has drawn from the natural selection processes of specialised extremophilic organisms, pioneering a new way to protect, revitalise and enhance the foundation of healthy skin, while supporting multi-level protection and long-term visible improvements.
