
Melbourne dermatologist Dr Vanessa Palmer shares her experience with the UltraClear cold-fibre laser and how it has reshaped her approach to resurfacing.

Why I introduced UltraClear into my practice
We had been utilising our Erbium laser for aggressive resurfacing with seven to 10 days real downtime, and we were reaching the limits with treatment tolerability even with compounded topical numbing creams.
When I first learned about UltraClear at an American Academy of Dermatology meeting, what stood out immediately was the versatility, the improved recovery times and, most importantly, the improved patient comfort – even at intensive settings – while still achieving very nice lifting and tightening results. I arranged a demonstration trial to confirm this in my own clinic. We subsequently purchased the first UltraClear machine in Victoria and have never looked back.

A new era of resurfacing

CO₂ laser has always been considered the gold standard for resurfacing. However, the downtime associated with intensive CO₂ treatments has become a limitation for many patients.
With cold fibre laser technology, we can achieve intensive treatment results with downtime tailored to specific patient needs. UltraClear offers a wide spectrum of settings and options – from light resurfacing with rapid turnaround to heavy intensive treatments that may be considered before surgical intervention.
When I was introduced to UltraClear, it was described to me as the difference between a Blackberry and an iPhone. Having now used the platform personally, this analogy certainly rings true.
UltraClear in practice
With any new laser, caution at first is best practice. It is important to adhere to recommended settings until sufficient experience with the platform has been gained. As more patients are treated and results are observed, parameters can be safely pushed where appropriate to reliably achieve optimal outcomes.
UltraClear is efficient to use and integrate into practice. Even more intensive treatments take less time to perform, which improves patient comfort and is more time-effective for the clinic.
Cold fibre laser and the future of skin resurfacing
I believe cold fibre laser represents the future of resurfacing. Improved tolerability, lower downtime and impressive results attest to this.
For practitioners deciding between investing in a traditional CO₂ laser and a platform such as UltraClear, it is important to consider how patient expectations have changed. Downtime tolerance has decreased, and safety and reproducibility are paramount in all cosmetic treatments offered.

UltraClear: the world’s first cold-fibre ablative fractional laser
