enCurve is the easy, comfortable way to deliver circumferential reduction of the abdomen and flanks.

enCurve is a new generation of intelligent adipocyte-targeting systems to ensure great curves with maximum comfort for the patient and minimum stress for the operator. Made by Lutronic and distributed by Advanced Cosmeceuticals, enCurve is a non-contact field radiofrequency (RF) system, which reduces abdominal, leg and arm circumference through gently eliminating fat cells.

Dr Glen Calderhead, PhD, the father of 830nm LED phototherapy and Vice President of Scientific Affairs at Lutronic, says enCurve represents a key development in non-invasive fat reduction.

“enCurve gently removes the adipocytes through natural apoptosis,” he says. “It is classified as hyperthermic treatment but not to the point where it creates instant damage; instead, it’s delayed apoptosis.”

In a field RF system, the applicator, which is set up over the target tissue (never in actual contact), generates a constantly oscillating electromagnetic field at 27.12 MHz per second. At this frequency, adipose tissue becomes a selective target, and the high frequency oscillating field generates heat restricted to the fatty tissue, but not affecting skin, muscles or blood vessels.

“When adipocytes are heated to over 43°C up to around 47°C for 30 to 45 minutes, it causes the cells to go into natural and gentle programmed cell death, known as apoptosis,” explains Dr Calderhead. “After 24 hours or so the cell membranes denature, allowing the lipid contained in the cell to escape, and the body’s scavengers, the macrophages, remove the lipid and cell detritus which are now foreign bodies and move them to the lymphatic system, after which they are excreted naturally from the body via the liver and especially the kidneys.

“enCurve with field RF is in direct contrast to other systems that instantly destroy the cell. By destroying the cell in this way, a much heavier load is placed on the macrophages to get rid of the higher volume of debris created by freezing and then thawing compared with the gentle fat cell death of enCurve.”

Contactless & comfortable

Unlike other non-invasive fat reduction devices, enCurve is both contactless with minimal discomfort. enCurve is never in direct contact with the skin, so no heat is transferred directly to the epidermis.

“There’s a space between the applicator and the tissue and the applicator pushes the electromagnetic field into the tissue where it is selectively absorbed in the fatty layer, and where it heats up the fat,” says Dr Calderhead.

The Ab Applicator and a Multi Applicator deliver personalised and tailored treatments. The enCurve applicator can be positioned over the abdomen and flanks at the same time, providing a hands-free procedure over the entire area in one session, making it an easy and comfortable treatment.

It can be used on multiple areas including the upper arms, thighs, the bottom and abdomen. Different applicators are used for different parts of the body and some can be done simultaneously.

“The patient feels gentle warmth, and the epidermis and dermis never reaches more than 43 degrees. Patients are left with a little erythema, which disappears between 12 and 24 hours, but if you immediately put them under Healite II, the redness disappears within 1.5 and 2 hours.

It is also recommended to have Healite II treatment the day before the enCurve treatment in order to boost the macrophages.”

830nm LED is known to make macrophages recognise, move to and engulf their target faster, which is then removed by natural metabolic processes within 12 to 24 hours.

The perfect frequency, tuned to adipocytes

enCurve uses a specialised frequency (27.12MHz) to selectively target and heat adipocytes to the optimal temperature to cause denaturation of cells, leading to the adipocyte’s death.

In addition to the applicator head, there is the Air Mode, which blows cold air over the skin. This is not just for comfort; it also works to cut down perspiration, which can potentially heat up on the surface and cause hot spots.

Impedance-induced heating can be known to have potential resistivity changes between patients, or even in the same patient, through natural processes such as respiration and movement. Through enCurve’s unique Personalized Impedance Synchronization Applications (PISA), which provides real-time feedback, changes in impedance are detected and optimum parameters are automatically selected to maintain the ideal temperature of the adipocyte. This minimises energy loss and achieves a better clinical outcome.

The percentage of fat cells reduced depends on the amount of fat cells originally present. In terms of circumferential reduction, it ranges from 2cm to 18cm, with the average being 5cm. There have been several papers about metabolic syndrome – hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes type II – all by-products of metabolic syndrome.

“If you can reduce circumference by around 5cm you are going to reduce metabolic syndrome occurrence. Metabolic changes can be prevented. enCurve will reduce visceral fat, as seen in MRI studies,” says Dr Calderhead.

“For these reasons, I believe very strongly that enCurve is a medical health device as much as it is an aesthetic one. It assists people towards a more healthy lifestyle.”

The treatment time is generally between 30 to 60 minutes, and four to six treatments are recommended once a week for optimal results.

“Patients will start to see results after the second session. The average reduction is around the 5cm mark,” says Dr Calderhead.

“One study compared results at four weeks in 27 patients and 19 patients for a further two sessions with even greater circumference reduction, so there is an argument that results can be achieved with subsequent sessions, albeit not as dramatic as it is in the first four weeks.”

“Patients with a lower BMI and small pockets of stubborn fat will still see a reduction after treatment with enCurve, however the most dramatic results and greatest circumference loss will be seen in patients with a higher BMI,” he says.

Versatile, easy and comfortable, enCurve is an exciting advancement in non-surgical body contouring, producing effective results in a quicker timeframe with minimal downtime.
